The Pi Beta Phi Mission

To promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential, and enrich lives through community service.

The Founding of Pi Beta Phi

A Heritage of Service and Personal Development

Pi Beta Phi was founded in 1867 by twelve Monmouth College students who dreamed of a secret society where they could foster deep friendship, personal growth, and strong leadership.

After forming their new organization, originally named β€œI.C. Sorosis,” the twelve women created a mission statement: β€œTo promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential, and enrich lives through community service.”

Adopting the popular tradition of using Greek letters, the name of their society was later changed to Pi Beta Phi. Because of the positive impact the organization has had on the lives of so many women, there are over 130 Pi Beta Phi Chapters at Universities across the United States and Canada.

Since 1917, USC Pi Phis have devoted themselves to the core Pi Beta Phi values of:

  • Integrity
  • Honor and Respect
  • Lifelong Commitment
  • Personal and Intellectual Growth
  • Sincere Friendship
  • Philanthropic Service to Others

In 2007, our California Gamma chapter of Pi Beta Phi at the University of Southern California received national recognition for Intellectual Development, Organizational Knowledge, and Leadership Development from Pi Beta Phi national headquarters. We were also awarded the Most Improved GPA in our region, and the University itself has recognized us for our excellence in Alumnae relations.
